Apologetics

Apologetics is the practice of defending one’s belief by presenting reasonable and logical arguments which support the said belief or claim. Those who practice this particular course are called “apologists”and those of us who are Christians, we are all commanded to be apologists. God advises us of this in 1 Pet. 3:15:

“…but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence…”

God wants His people to always be ready and equipped with the knowledge to tell others why we believe what we believe and why it is we do what we do. Are there some people who are better at this than others? Of course. Does that mean that’s an excuse for those who may not be good at this? Not at all. Everyone is capable of knowing (even if it is the basics) the principles by which we can defend our faith and our belief in God to others.

This is especially important considering that we live in a society that questions and doubts almost everything but especially religion and Christianity. Ponder on this for a minute: Most, if not all atheists and agnostics are always ready to divulge why they don’t believe in God or why they doubt His existence. They may not always know everything but they won’t shy away from supporting their beliefs.

There is a thing or two we can learn about that kind of attitude. Unfortunately, the atheist and agnostic are misled and deceived but even then they won’t give up sharing their beliefs with others. Christians are led in the right way by the right One and we have the ultimate source of information at our disposal. The question is are we willing to study and learn enough to know why we believe what we do and are we willing to share that information with those who question God and our faith in Him?

A lot of believers tend to think that this is just the job of the preacher or the elder or some more experienced person. The bible says it is the responsibility of every single saint to know why they follow after Christ and they are to defend this to everyone who asks them why they do it. If we are not reading our bibles and taking advantage of study opportunities, we won’t be able to this and we won’t even be able to build our own faith. May we all strive to grow in God and may we be ready to give a defense for our faith.
