The Christian and Social Media

Social media platforms unfortunately dominate the time of most people these days whether it be Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, WhatsApp etc. Many Christians may have one or more of these accounts and that does not make it inherently wrong. Like most things, how we use what we have will reflect our priorities and what’s in our hearts.

Disciples of Jesus have an important responsibility to love Him first and foremost above all things and to love our neighbor as ourselves. When it comes to social media and how we use it, this is not exempt. We need to be careful that what we say, share, post, record etc. reflect the values we claim to practice and observe. If Jesus was our friend of social media (and He is because He sees everything) would he approve of what we do on those platforms?

Do we seek to encourage our neighbors and friends to serve God and love Him? Are we spending our time arguing with others, gossiping, engaging in lewd activities or sharing media that divides us a people? Social media is a virtual world that can destroy lives if one is not careful and considerate. What we put on the internet will always be there and if it doesn’t reflect the pattern of God’s word then we need to strongly consider where our hearts lie.

Social media can be such a wonderful tool for us as Christians to share the word and make new friends who we can reach out to and help in a variety of ways. If you are one of those people that does not bother with social media these principles apply to you as well. Are our actions and thoughts in line with God’s will? Would Jesus approve of these things? Let’s consider these things and make every effort to be pleasing to God.
