The Word of God

We have recently begun a series of lessons on Sunday night that deal with God’s word being trustworthy and reliable. The purpose of these lessons is to get us to realize that the Bible, God’s revealed word, is exactly what we need for our lives. It is complete, it is perfect, and it is absolutely trustworthy. The evidences that we study, and encounter only serves to solidify the truth that we already know. What we have recorded for us in our bibles isn’t fiction and fables that serve to entertain us. God, through different men, carefully recorded the events surrounding His love for us and He ensured that we would all have access to it today. What are some things we could say about the word of God?

God’s Word is unchangeable! I don’t mean that someone cannot physically change what is written within the book itself. The point is that what God has spoken cannot be changed. We could try to twist it, make it looser and maybe even tighter but it will have no effect to us or to anyone else. Jesus spoke to the religious leaders of His day about this very problem. They were of the mindset that their traditions were just as important as God’s word if not better. At times they would completely misuse the scriptures to which Jesus responded: “thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that” (Mk. 7:13). They tried to change it to suit their own selfish desires, but Jesus told them all they did was invalidate it for themselves.

One of the major reasons God’s word is eternal and it cannot be broken is because it comes from Him (not trying to state the obvious). The point is God is unchangeable and He simply cannot be broken and limited by anything we or anyone else do. If we can understand that, then we understand that the things that come from Him (such as the bible) has the same properties just as His nature. What exactly are some of those characteristics?

  1. It is Eternal (1 Pet. 1:25)– Like God, His word is eternal. There is no other book on the planet earth that this can be said of. When this world is long gone, God’s word is still going to be around because it is capable of withstanding change and destruction of every kind.

  1. It is Pure (Psa. 12:6)– God is known for being free of any darkness, taint and blemish. He is utterly and completely pure and His word carries the same property. There is no scripture that is tainted by contradiction, fiction or distrust. The bible is the most complete book in the history of the universe, and it is without a doubt the only book that is perfect and pure in nature.

  1. It is True (Jn. 8:45; 17:17)– The writer of Hebrews tells us that it is impossible for God to lie. As such, His holy book contains nothing but the objective truth. God tells us everything we need to know in all honesty and sincerity. He hides nothing from us as far as who He is and what He wants us to do.

  1. It Saves (Jn. 6:68)– No matter where you go in the world, you will probably find someone that believes in salvation of some kind or some type. This notion is rooted deeply in the bible because it comes from the One who is the Savior of all mankind. The heart of the gospel message is Jesus dying on the cross for the sin of man so we can be saved and live with Him forever! If we listen to His words which are written in the bible, we can have this salvation. Are you willing to listen to God’s word? Do you want to be saved?
